Yesterday I was invited to a mochi making event. Suddenly I was handed a fresh warm mochi and told to enjoy it right away. As I was hurriedly eating it, swallowing a slowly longer growing section, I suddenly felt unable to breathe, and this caused a spasm of fear or panic. Somewhat like water boarding perhaps. It was just a moment, but I recalled these stories and decided to take things slowly.

Better warn the small children and youth as they are might given mochi without warning or knowledge of risks. Those elderly people know for decades what risk is included and they are already used to it. I wonder why they expose also themselves to that not delicious and potentially dangerous food and even promote it everywhere and newly year by year, giving it away to family, acquaintances and customers in full knowledge of the danger. Maybe it’s even sometimes offered as a little killer attempt, to people with dementia, highest age, or not capable of helping themselves, chewing well or having power or will to resist offer and ingestion. Quite a grey zone, I guess…

Dyson should use this as an advertisement campaign with a comedic theme.
Mochi is dangerous for all ages. Last year I choked on a small piece of mochi. Got stuck in my throat and wouldn’t go down. Had to drink boiling coffee to help it go down. Burnt my mouth bad but that’s better than choking to death.
If you don’t put it in your mouth you can’t choke on it.
The last thought must be "Am I one of them?"

This is true, and for the nori seaweed too.

This is disingenuous : All those benefits are from the nori seaweed wrap, not the mochi itself, which has negligible vitamin or mineral content. Why, surely you could just eat the nori and get the same benefits.
Nice try. Nice googling, too.
I think back in the old days mochi was a rare treat and made in different flavors. My understanding is that daily good was genmai.

When I first came to Japan honks ago, all the mochi was white. Now we can (and do) buy genmai and yomogi versions. Much tastier and healthier.
